The WJKDF was born with the idea of taking original Jeet Kune Do to the average man or woman who did not have the ability to pay large sums of money for exclusive instruction, or were in a remote area away from any certified teachers. The original Jeet Kune Do Training Manual is the best selling manual that has sold more copies that any other JKD reference book other than those written by Lee himself. Unlike the other reference materials there is no philosophical mess to wade through, only technique as taught at the original three Jeet Kune Do Schools.

We now have over six thousand members worldwide who like the WJKDF strive to keep original Jeet Kune Do alive. As JKD was the first mixed martial art founded by the most famous martial artist in history there of course is much controversy. There are many questions that we are sure you have that we will answer in depth. The WJKDF president Professor Carter Hargrave will be listing the most common questions or misconceptions on the chief instructor page of this website. Our goal is to bring together martial artists and instructors and educate the public with facts as our information comes directly in line from teachings from Bruce Lee's schools, not from a book or other indirect manner.

We do not engage in politics of any kind and will not associate with those who do. We are an educational organization. If it weren't for the politics and egos that have surrounded JKD it would be the most popular martial art in the world, instead of a closely guarded secret only available to a hand picked few. We aim to change all that, and have done so one great student at a time.

Is it time for you to step up and take the reins of the most effective fighting system founded by the number one martial artist of all time.

Even today JKD is still best in effectiveness in real life self defense situations, and when your life or the life of a loved one is at stake this is what you want and need.

We offer Student, Instructor, Apprentice Instructor, and School Certifications to individuals Worldwide.

It is our goal that you find our teaching and information a valuable part of your journey in the Martial Arts, and that knowing us has made a difference in your life, and at last you have found a place where you belong. Let us help you cut through the confusion and find the real art.

Welcome to Jeet Kune Do!! The Way of the Intercepting Fist

The Jeet Kune Do System

The style of Jeet Kune Do literally means way of the intercepting fist, and this is not just a random name there is an actual technique that is an intercepting fist. Bruce Lees famous fighting system began in 1962 with his Wing Chun based modified Gung Fu. Lee's Wing Chun Training was from his famous master Yip Man, and this was his first formal training in the martial arts. From this formal training Lee began his journey to be the most proficient martial artist or fighter possible. He quickly learned that traditional Kung Fu in its current form was not well suited for his purposes. He often referred to the traditional martial arts as a "classical mess", and set out to absorb what was useful and to disregard the rest. He dismissed the standard stances and punching technique for his own new philosophies that even today are revolutionary. Jeet Kune Do was the first mixed martial art in history, and was comprised of three main systems of fighting. While Lee often studies other arts, he did not practice them as a student. He only viewed them from the outside to learn their deficiencies so he could place appropriate counters in his system to exploit all the other martial arts weaknesses and lack of fluidity.

In his three schools he had during his lifetime, Lee focused on three different objectives for each one, and rarely blended his teachings across the time lines in the classroom known as a Kwoon. While he enjoyed the philosophical aspects of arts, he was a hands on teacher and student of change if it meant making his system better. Throughout martial arts history there have been many misconceptions about the Bruce Lee fighting system often referred to as scientific street fighting. One of which was that it was only a philosophy and not a style. JKD was always a style with a set of techniques for each of the three schools, and Lee also had written training manuals with the techniques for his prized students, (no not all student received the written manuals). Jeet Kune Do Specifics

The number one rule in JKD is economy of motion. Everything is designed to be as efficient as possible to be more combat effective, as well as to conserve the practitioners energy for combat. Lee learned early on when one of his sparring sessions went over half an hour that he was winded and must make changes to his classical Gung Fu training to end the fight as soon as possible.

Second is that the stances were altered to make them more natural and cat like, and that the orthodox left lead out stance was abandoned for the strong side out lead.

Third was the elimination of all chambering or telegraphing of movement to allow for less predictability and more suprise in the attack.

He defined the ranges of combat into four categories.

Kicking

Punching

Trapping

Grappling

All of these ranges refer to distance, and this was the first art to include all four ranges. Most arts at the time only utilized two at the most.

Now Lee addressed the offensive maneuver in his Five Ways of Attack

SDA Single Direct Attack

HIA Hand Immobilization Attack

PIA Progressive Indirect Attack

ABC Attack By Combination

ABD Attack by Drawing

The Two Jeet Kune Do Systems

There are two distinct Jeet Kune Do systems or branches. The first system is know as original. The original is the exact techniques that Bruce Lee taught at his schools where are teachers learned and that we pass on to you.

The second Branch is called Jeet Kune Do Concepts and is mainly available in California as most of its teachers were based there the most noted being Dan Innosanto. This branch has mainly Filipino stick and weapon fighting as its basis instead of the Wing Chun and Western Boxing and French Fencings of the original.

The WJKDF teaches the original JKD, not concepts. This is not to say one is better than the other, only that we deal with JKD core teachings that Bruce Lee taught, not techniques that he could have or should have.
